The first two kata that we learn in GKR Karate are known as Taigyoku Shodan and Taigyoku Nidan, but they are more commonly referred to as First and Second kata.
While the idea of learning two kata may be daunting, both are identical in their pattern, with the only difference between each is the addition of a front kick in the Second kata.
Each of these kata are 20 counts long and comprise of only:
- One stance (long forward stance – zenkutsu-datchi).
- One block (groin block – gedan barai).
- One punch (stomach level punch – chudan tsuki).
- One kick (front kick – mae geri).
First Kata (Taigyoku Shodan)
The kata is performed by Shihan Stacey Karetsian. He performs this kata at medium pace making it easier to follow.
You can also purchase the kata on DVD that shows a number of different angles and a detailed workshop of the kata. In the workshop, techniques are shown in great detail and a number of bunkai are also demonstrated. To purchase the DVD visit the GKR Shop on this website.
