Welcome to Green Belt

Green Belt (6th Kyu) is an exciting stage in your karate journey. At this point, you have gained a solid grasp of the fundamentals and are now in a position to begin building on your confidence, control and precision during training.

At Green Belt you begin to think beyond just learning and repeating the techniques, you start to consider how your movements coordinate with each other, how timing and distance influence a technique, and how your skills can be put into practice in various situations.

Your instructor will likewise prompt you to take more responsibility for your own training and will help you to understand the small details which can make a big difference to your karate.

Developing Your Karate Skills

Green Belt involves putting all that you have learned together and becoming more confident with your karate. You will continue making progress by:

  • Developing stronger and more precise techniques
  • Improving balance, movement and body control
  • Introduction to Kata Saifa
  • Continuing to develop your kumite skills
  • Applying techniques with greater control
  • Building confidence through advanced training

Understanding Kata Saifa

At Green Belt you will be introduced to Kata Saifa, which highlights a significant stage in your karate training. This kata is based on the techniques you have already learned and at the same time includes a greater variety of stances, strikes, blocks and movements than first and second kata.

Kata Saifa consists of 20 moves and students should aim to concentrate on technique, control, movement and timing rather than just attempting to perform the kata at speed. Take your time, learn each movement properly and then slowly increase your speed as your technique gets better.

By practising kata Saifa regularly, your body control, coordination and understanding of how the techniques in the kata can be applied to practical karate situations will all improve.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is a Green Belt in karate?

Green Belt (6th Kyu) is the grade that follows Orange Belt (7th Kyu) and involves the development of stronger karate technique, movement, kata, kumite and practical application skills.

  • What skills will I learn as a Green Belt?

You will keep on improving your karate techniques as you work on your movement, balance, timing, control, kata and kumite and at the same time begin to gain a better understanding of how your techniques can be used in combination.

  • What is Kihon?

The basic techniques in karate are known as kihon, and they consist of punches, blocks, kicks and stances. It is essential to have strong kihon since it forms the basis for more advanced karate training.

  • Why is technique important at Green Belt?

Technique matters at Green Belt because it helps you build a strong base for more advanced skills. When you focus on good technique, you reduce mistakes and avoid bad habits. This makes it easier to learn new techniques and kata as you progress Good technique also lowers your risk of injury and lets you use your energy better. At Green Belt level, building these habits is key to steady progress.

The higher the grades that you reach, the more important good technique becomes, since good posture, balance, movement and control all assist you in carrying out the techniques more effectively and consistently.

  • What steps can I take in order to prepare for my next grading?

The most effective way to prepare for your next grading is to commit to regular training. By attending classes regularly, practicing techniques and kata with intent, and taking on board the feedback given by your instructor, you will progress well towards your next grade. While it is important to spend time on areas of your karate that require work, it is also important to keep building upon the things that you are already doing well.

  • Does Green Belt training make you better at self-defence?

Practising karate can help to build abilities such as awareness, coordination, movement, timing, control and confidence. The more you train, the greater your understanding of how karate techniques and movements can be put into practice when dealing with self-defence situations.
