Welcome to Orange Belt

Orange Belt (7th Kyu) is an important stage in your karate journey. You have now acquired the basic skills needed at White and Yellow Belt and will start to develop greater confidence, control and understanding in your techniques.

At Orange Belt your training begins to become more detailed, you will work on combining techniques, develop more solid stances and improve your movement, while at the same time be given an introduction to kata as an important element of your karate development.

You will also keep improving your kumite abilities by learning how timing, distance, movement and control work together when training with a partner.

Developing Your Karate Skills

Orange Belt training is based upon the foundations that were established in your previous grades and you will continue to work on:

  • Developing stronger and more advanced stances
  • Improving combinations and transitions between techniques
  • Introduction to Kata
  • Advanced balance, timing and coordination
  • Developing greater understanding of kumite
  • First and Second Kata techniques
  • Continue developing practical martial arts and self-defence skills

Understanding Kata

Kata plays a significant role in karate training, and when you’re an Orange Belt you will start to gain a more profound understanding of how each technique combines as part of coordinated movement.

Instead of just memorizing the sequence, try to pay attention to your position, posture, breathing, timing, and technique. Practicing kata regularly can help to improve concentration, coordination and control.

Doing the kata both at home and in class will make you more familiar with the movements and will prepare you for your next grading.
