GKR Karate International World Cup 3
The date was set…. The venue spectacular…..The third Go Kan Ryu bi-annual World Cup was upon us. 1700 + competitors from four countries converged on the State Sports Centre, in the Sydney Olympic district to decide….. Who would be the next Go Kan Ryu World Champion?
There was much anticipation from competitors, and with twenty one (21) rings all set up, the action was always going to be hot. With the march about to start, the patriotism was high in the warm up area, with the English team leading the way. Not to be out done the New Zealanders, Australians and for the first time, USA all started singing with their own national pride.
The kids kicked of the tournament demonstrating an enormous amount of courage for just entering. As if that wasn’t enough, they displayed tremendous talent and martial spirit sending a clear message throughout the club……. The future is in safe hands.
After a long day of competition, Saturday drew to a close with some outstanding kata and kumite from the 16 – 20 Men’s 3rd Kyu and above division. Their speed, grace, agility and fierce competitive natures left the crowd to wonder… could it get any better. Sunday showed it did!
Sunday started with a BOOM with the ever popular team events, and of course, the premier event…. Black Belt Opens. With arguably the strongest ever fields in both the male and female Opens, all competitors knew it was going to be tough from the start.
With everything on the line, each competitor put their strongest foot forward. Just as one fantastic kata was completed, the next would set a new benchmark. Go Kan Ryu’s finest had to pull out all the stops, and that was just to get into the finals!
