New Zealand Class Update header image

Dear Auckland Students, Parents and Caregivers,

We hope you and your families are well and looking forward to the relaxing of lockdown restrictions over the coming days and weeks.

Not long to go now!

We’re excited to announce that karate training has now been authorised to return from Friday 3rd December, and we are currently in the process of finalising venue availability with our schools and council facilities. We expect to have feedback as to when your local classes will be opening by early to mid-next week and will be back in touch with you as soon as we have confirmation.

Traffic Light CPF System

With the release of the New Zealand government’s ‘Traffic Light’ Covid Protection Framework (CPF), we will be required to make some temporary adjustments to the way we operate our classes upon reopening. The CPF breaks down activities into a number of categories and applies different restrictions to each one. Some categories have been given the choice to operate under one of two pathways ie:

(1) CVCs – Covid Vaccination Checks Required

This means only allowing students 12 years and over who are fully vaccinated to attend classes for the time being (under 12 years are not required to be vaccinated and can attend regardless)

(2) No CVCs – No Checking for Proof of Vaccination

This means allowing all students to attend classes irrespective of age or vaccination status.

We have spent the last few days seeking clarity on how these options relate to our club. Whilst organised community sports like netball and basketball were offered both CVC and No-CVC options, it was confirmed by Sport NZ that Martial Arts will fall into the same category as gyms, fitness, yoga and dance classes. This category only allows for a CVC policy in both the RED and ORANGE stages of the framework. In addition to this, it appears likely that our hall hire arrangements with schools will be dependent on us following a ‘vaccinated-only’ pathway for the time being.

Whilst we’d rather not be in a position of having to exclude students from training at this time, we also remain supportive of the efforts being made to reduce the health risk across the community. It is therefore incumbent upon our club to adopt the CVC framework requirements.

As such, it will be necessary for all karate students who are 12 years and over to provide proof of vaccination on arrival at their first class back. Students under the age of 12 do not have to be vaccinated and can attend as normal. Any parent who wishes to enter the dojo will also be required to provide the same proof of vaccination. If you are a student who travels to multiple dojos and trains with different instructors, then you will need to provide proof of vaccination the first time you train with each different instructor.

We appreciate the changes will be disruptive for some people and we apologise for any inconvenience that these interim measures may cause. For any students who are unable to train at this time due to these CPF restrictions, we intend to arrange some alternative training options in the near future once we establish student numbers. We will keep you posted regarding these classes as soon as they are finalised.

I hope this clarifies our immediate course or action regarding the implementation of the Traffic Light system, and trust that you can understand the need for us to follow these requirements.

Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to making contact with you within the next few days about restart dates for your regular dojo. Please make contact via the below details if you have any queries or simply reply back to this email.
